Robertson Foundation supports underpriviledged

A $7-million package has been released by an American foundation to support social intervention programmes that enable the underprivileged to acquire employable skills to earn a living.
The money, which was provided by Robertson Foundation, is being channelled through some organisations to be disbursed into specific projects.
The Hunger Project received $5 million to execute specific projects in some parts of the country, the Assemblies of God Relief Development Programme (AGRDP) received $1 million to provide vocational training while the Institute of Scientific Social and Economic Research (ISSER) of the University of Ghana received $1 million over five years to evaluate the impact of the projects on the lives of the people.
A member of the foundation, Mr Bill Cotter, disclosed this to the Daily Graphic after inspecting some projects undertaken by the foundation.
He said some trafficked children who were brought to Accra from northern Ghana to engage in menial jobs had been identified and being trained in various vocations after which they would be returned to northern Ghana to establish their own businesses.
Mr Cotter said ISSER, which was working in partnership with the Yale University in the USA, was particularly evaluating both the AGRDP and the NGO projects under the supervision of Dr John Anarfi, the Deputy Director of ISSER.
Praising Ghana for its good image abroad, Mr Cotter said the foundation chose Ghana as the first country abroad to gain from its benevolence based on the good investment climate coupled with the peaceful atmosphere prevailing in the country.
He stated that the foundation was interested in identifying other possible areas of the country where it could provide the needed support towards ensuring that the youth were engaged in productive ventures.
