THE Intercity STC Coaches Limited has paid GH¢ 16,000 as a compensation to the families of the 16 passengers who perished in a road accident at Komenda in June 12, 2008.
Also, GH¢ 7,666 has been paid to the Cape Coast Regional Hospital to cover the cost of treatment of the passengers who sustained various degrees of injury in the accident.
The Managing Director of the STC Coaches Limited, Mr Kwame Adjei-Seffah, who spoke to the Daily Graphic in Accra said the compensation was paid under the company’s Gemini Life Insurance Company (GLICO) Intercity Nanteyie Travel Policy which insure its passengers against exepected situations.
As the only transport company in the country with such a policy the Mr Adjei-Seffah said under the scheme not more than GH¢500 was paid to cover the cost of injured passengers and in the case of death GH¢1000 was paid to the bereaved family as compensation.
He, therefore, advised passengers whose cost of treatment exceeded the GH¢500 threshold to pursue the regular standard motto vehicle insurance policy to pay the difference.
“Under our policy passengers are entitled to several insurance benefits and it is to assuage the pains of affected families in case of death,” according to Mr Adjei-Seffah.
He called on all those whose relations were involved in the accident to contact the Western Regional office of the STC for identification to receive their cheques.
He advised travellers to provide the company’s sales executive accurate data at any sales point to facilitate identification and communication and also to ensure that passengers had their names on the way bill in lieu of a ticket.
