THE People’s National Convention (PNC) has said the circumstances surrounding the conviction and sentence of Mr Tsatsu Tsikata raises fundamental issues regarding the independence and integrity of the judiciary.
“While not advocating generally that persons charged with offences punishable under our laws and found guilty should not be punished, we take the view that the processes of the trial, judgement, conviction and sentence of such persons should be in accordance with due process, be impartial and devoid of prejudice in any form,” it said.
A statement signed by the General Secretary of the PNC, Mr Bernard Mornah, urged the Judiciary to be free from political interferences and vindictiveness, and pleaded for the release of Mr Tsikata.
It said the PNC stood in solidarity with the family and friends of Mr Tsikata as well as with all well-meaning Ghanaians who had in various ways been engaged in trying to raise conscience and consciousness of the public in relation to his incarceration.
“We salute your quest for justice and share in your hope of his release soon,” the statement said.
It said it was their hope that the Judiciary would adhere to PNC’s call so as to enlist public confidence in the institution of justice.
“We believe in fairness and justice for all and not a selective justice,” the statement added.
